With such star attractions as Tahiti and Bora Bora, it's understandable that many people have not heard of the other Society Islands. One of the most romantic is Huahine, which is actually two islands joined by a bridge. What passes for action is found in the main town of Fare (pronounced far-ay) on the northern island of Huahine Nui. Away from this little port, life is definitely slow-paced, and you'll be lucky to find anyone stirring on a lazy afternoon in any of the villages of Huahine Iti, the southern island. Most locals ride bicycles rather than drive cars, and plantations still grow melons and other crops. Taha'a is often overlooked by tourists in French Polynesia, but those in the know adore its lovely lagoon and wide array of water sports. Taha'a is also known as the Vanilla Island because of its main export and subsequent rich aroma.
