    Discover the Oregon Coast

The Oregon coast is a wonderful place to visit for a day trip from Portland or for a week of vacation to explore the great Northwest. I grew up in neighboring Washington State and attended college in Oregon. I was lucky to be a short drive from Newport on the Oregon coast, and this began my journey to discover all that the Oregon coast has to offer those who take time to visit.

    Seaside

    The historic Seaside Promenade

    Seaside

In 1805, explorers Lewis and Clark traveled across the country from Missouri to Oregon and reached the Pacific Ocean. They established Fort Clatsop and spent time in Seaside, where the promenade has a statue of the duo.

      Yaquina Head Lighthouse

Yaquina Head Lighthouse in Newport, Oregon

When traveling the Oregon Coast Highway, the drive is picturesque, offering wonderful places to stop, view vistas, and take photographs. There are 11 lighthouses along the Oregon coast. The Tillamook Rock lighthouse is located on a rocky island and can be seen in the distance at Cannon Beach. Cape Meares lighthouse is on the Three Capes Scenic Loop outside of Tillamook. The tallest lighthouse on the Oregon coast is Yaquina Head Lighthouse, located in Newport, along with the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse. It is interesting to tour lighthouses and step back into the history of these sea beacons. - Opens a dialog

          Astoria

          View from the Astoria Column

          Astoria

Astoria is more than a seaport, as the town is situated on the Columbia River, which starts in British Columbia, Canada, and channels south to meet the Pacific Ocean. Some points of interest to check out are the Columbia River Maritime Museum, Fort Clatsop encampment, the Astoria Column that overlooks the Columbia River, Washington State, and the city of Astoria. Last year, when stopping for seafood in Astoria, my family stumbled upon the Astoria Nordic Heritage Park, which is a tribute to Scandinavian and Nordic immigrants.

            Haystack Rock

Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, Oregon

            Cannon Beach

Cannon Beach is a popular seaside town for visitors year-round. One of the main attractions, which towers 235 feet above the shoreline, is Haystack Rock, which is home to seabirds and tide pools. You will also gain magnificent views of Cannon Beach and the coastline from Ecola State Park, just three miles north of town. Visitors can enjoy local art displays, an Oregon photography gallery, shows at the Coaster Theatre Playhouse, a hometown bakery, distinctive coffee houses, and a chocolate café that sells chocolate from around the world. Cannon Beach is also dog-friendly, and my sweet Labrador, Tiara, has been lucky to enjoy memorable adventures on the Oregon coast.

                Cape Lookout State Park

Cape Lookout State Park with Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge

Traveling further south, you will have a chance to visit Hug Point near Arch Cape, Oswald West State Park, and the coastal town of Manzanita. There are state parks for day use, camping, and hiking trails for travelers along the Oregon coast. Nehalem Bay State Park is close to Manzanita, and the park offers visitors pathways that lead from Nehalem Bay inland to the ocean beaches on the other side of the park.

On your travels, you can follow the Three Capes Scenic Loop, which includes Cape Meares, Cape Lookout, and Cape Kiwanda. While you are in this part of Oregon, you can make a stop at Tillamook Creamery to learn how cheese is made and taste a variety of ice cream flavors.

If you are interested in migrating gray whales, these can be viewed along the Oregon coast from places like Depoe Bay from late March to June as the whales travel north towards Alaska. There are opportunities to catch fresh fish or crab with a local charter.

                  Newport, Oregon

                  Yaquina Bay Bridge, Newport, Oregon

                  Newport

My last stop is where it all began for me during my college years: Newport, Oregon. This town offers visitors the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Agate Beach, and Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area.

There is so much more to explore along the Oregon coast, so you can personally discover it. When it comes to travel, be inspired to always have a happy journey.
