Europe and Mediterranean: British Isles Cruise

Carnival Cruise Line

Quick Scotland lesson: the country is divided into the lowlands and highlands, and while it sounds like a matter of elevation, they basically just mean the north part and the south! A beacon of triumph and resilience, Belfast is a thriving city where Victorian splendor mixes with 21st century museums, revitalized docklands and a buzzing dining scene. Venture elsewhere in the Liverpool Bay region and you'll find sights like the glacier-formed Windermere Lake (England's longest), the meticulously-preserved city of Chester with its ancient walls, plus the first King Edward's Conwy Castle, straight out of the 1280s. Enjoy a day in emerald Ireland's buzzing capital city, where there's always a song to sing, a joke to tell and a pint to sink. Laid-back yet lively Dublin, Ireland, is crammed with a history of revolutionaries and literary heroes that dates back at least a millennium and a half.

Day 1 Port of Call Dover Departure 4:30pm

Overview

Dover is one of the most-visited towns in England but most of the 13 million people who travel to Dover each year are bound for one of the many ferries, catamarans or hydrofoils that cross the English Channel (more properly called the Dover Straits) to North-West France. A small number of travellers stop in the town and enjoy the 'Dover hospitality' that is on offer. There is information on these pages for people travelling into Dover by road/rail/cycle and for those wanting to take a ferry to France, including Port & Ferry News. Drivers will see very little of Dover itself as they enter on either the A20 from the South or the A2 from the North-West. In both cases, the roads arrive at the Harbour, where they join. The whole of Dover's town stretches inland from the Harbour and continues along three valleys into the Kent countryside. Dover is at one end of the North Downs and has several ranges of hills, two of which have fortresses dating from the medieval and Roman eras, as well as more modern (19th Century) times. Behind the town centre are the modern-day barracks, Dover's past and current commitments to the country have always included more than can be seen under the famous White Cliffs. Modern-day Dover has a mixed economy but is still very heavily dependent on the ferry industry. Other major employers include: the Ministry of Defence (at Connaught Barracks), numerous freight companies, vehicle sellers & repairers! The history of Dover is best covered in the many books and videos on the subject (available, of course, at the town's Museum!).

Day 2 Cruising
Day 3 Port of Call Holyhead Arrival 8:00am Departure 5:00pm

Overview

Holyhead is the largest town on the island of Anglesey and is perhaps known best for being a busy ferry port. However, visitors should also note that the town has several interesting attractions and is a bustling shopping and visitors area in its own right. The town center offers several good places to eat, a theatre and a cinema. There is a range of places for the visitor to stay and Holyhead is often used as an overnight stop on the way to, or from, holidaying in Ireland or as a center for touring the island of Anglesey itself. Around Holyhead, there is excellent fishing, golfing, and, of course, sailing facilities. Couple this with the wonderful scenery, walks, and beaches and visitors can easily relax for a few days. From Anglesey, ferries operate to Dublin with the superfast ferry only taking 99 minutes to complete the single journey. A day trip to sample the wonderful Dublin is easily achievable and is far cheaper than you think. History buffs will be well pleased to know Anglesey has several both historic and prehistoric sites close by, including burial chambers at Barcloddiad Yr Gawres and a church in the sea at Porth Cwyfan! Llys Rhosyr, the site of one of the most powerful and charismatic Welsh medieval princes has been discovered near the village of Newborough, on the South Western corner of the island. The maritime museum in Holyhead is well worth a visit where tourists can learn more about the 100 shipwrecks that have taken place in the vicinity.

Day 4 Port of Call Glasgow Arrival 10:00am Departure 8:00pm

Overview

Glasgow is one of the liveliest and most cosmopolitan destinations in Europe. The city has been reborn as a centre of style and vitality set against a backdrop of outstanding Victorian architecture. Glasgow boasts world-famous art collections, the best shopping in the United Kingdom outside London, and the most vibrant nightlife in Scotland. A must-see is the Art Nouveau splendour of Scotland's best-known architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh, whose inimitable style adorns attractions such as The Lighthouse, Glasgow School of Art, and House for an Art Lover. Art and culture are important in Glasgow life where galleries and museums are in abundance - most with free admission; the choice of over 20 includes the world's first Museum of Religion, the renowned Burrell Collection, and the contemporary Gallery of Modern Art. No visit would be complete without experiencing the city's shopping with high street stores, designer labels, and speciality outlets to explore, with welcome pit-stops in the class café culture around the Italian Centre, Merchant Square, or Gallery of Modern Art.

Day 5 Port of Call Belfast Arrival 8:00am Departure 5:00pm

Overview

Belfast offers the buzz and vibrancy of a capital city whilst being a gateway to the rural retreat of Northern Ireland. At the head of Belfast Lough, the city is compact and easy to get around, whether by car or on foot. Like all capital cities, Belfast offers a wide range of accommodations to suit all pockets, from cozy B&Bs around the university to well-appointed riverside self-catering establishments, to city-centre boutique hotels.
Belfast is teeming with a multitude of stylish bars, gourmet restaurants, trendy clubs, and some of the best shopping in the UK. Visitors can enjoy traditional Irish music in a local pub or dance the night away to the latest vibes – the choice is yours!
The birthplace of the Titanic, Belfast’s industrial heritage has shaped a city steeped in culture, portrayed at its best at the Ulster Museum, City Hall, the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, and the many buildings still standing. The many parks, gardens, and galleries offer a perfect haven to relax.
Within a couple of hours of Belfast, visitors can marvel at the Giant’s Causeway, walk the Mountains of Mourne, fish in Fermanagh, or visit the many picturesque villages in Northern Ireland - a perfect location to discover the rest of Northern Ireland!

Day 6 Port of Call Liverpool Arrival 8:00am Departure 5:00pm

Overview

Liverpool is fast becoming one of Europe’s most popular city break destinations. After being awarded European Capital of Culture 2008, the city has moved into the sights of travelers and tourists from around the world. Already famous as the birthplace of The Beatles, the city’s other cultural assets are justifiably touted as some of the finest in Europe. With more theatres, museums, and galleries than any other UK city outside London, Liverpool’s history as one of the world’s great ports has left a remarkable legacy of art and architecture that gives it a distinctive look and unique atmosphere. Liverpool is also one of the world’s great sporting cities with horse racing at Aintree and Haydock, and 40 golf courses – seven of which are Championship standard, including the Royals Birkdale and Lytham, not to mention Liverpool and Everton FC. So if it’s Strawberry Fields, Premiership football, or Europe’s finest culture you’re looking for, it has to be Liverpool.

Day 7 Port of Call Dublin Arrival 7:30am Departure 5:30pm

Overview

Dublin is the capital of Ireland, and Irish culture and cuisine. The regional and microbreweries that once flourished, although crowded out of business for the last hundred or so years by Guinness, more for its marketing and transportation triumphs than necessarily for qualitative reasons, are coming back to add local color and variety to the famous old Irish pubs. Ireland has produced some of the world’s greatest writers, and in its traditional folk ballads and rich melodies, you can hear the unique elements that form the roots of modern rhythm and blues music.

Day 8 Port of Call Cobh Arrival 8:00am Departure 7:00pm

Overview

Queenstown it was for some decades before reverting to its old Irish name in 1922 - the Cobh (cove) of Cork. Is there anywhere in Ireland more full of poignant memories than this embarkation point for America? From here hundreds of thousands of mostly hungry and penniless Irish men and women left to build a new life, especially in the Famine years of 1844-48. Many thrived and prospered, but many died on the journey in the terrible traveling conditions of the time. It is a pleasant town; its streets climb the steep slope of a hill, the top of which is crowned by the very fine St. Coleman's Cathedral which has a carillon of 47 bells. Cobh is situated on Great Island, one of the three large islands in Cork harbor which are all now joined by roads and bridges - Little Island and Fota are the others. The harbor is one of the largest and safest anywhere, being capable of taking the largest vessels afloat. The great Transatlantic liners used to come up to the 1950s.On the quayside, there is a memorial to the victims of the Lusitania, many of whom are buried in the old church cemetery. The ship was sunk off Kinsale in 1915 by a German submarine, an action which was responsible for bringing the United States of America into the Great War, the survivors were brought back here. Another unhappy association is with the Titanic, 'the safest liner in the world'. Queenstown was her last port of call on her fateful maiden voyage. The Queenstown Story is based on the disused portions of the railway station at Cobh. This highly imaginative visitor attraction tells the story of emigration from Cobh in the period of the famine in 1845 up to the era of the great Liners in the 1950s. The historical role that Cobh harbor has played as a port is also illustrated. At Cobh, one looks over Haulbowline and Spike Islands, formerly the base of the Irish Naval Service. To the east, Cork Harbour leads to East Ferry. Roches Point can be seen to the south. To the southwest is the yachting center of Crosshaven.

Day 9 Cruising
