Felicia Robinson and her daughters Kaylin (left) and Kendall in Florence, Italy, in 2022.
Travel can be amazing and lifechanging, but it can also be expensive and confusing, with a labyrinth of hidden costs. For these reasons, in 2000, Costco launched Costco Travel. Just as the company does with all its products and services, this new area focused on travel services with extremely limited markups, and an eye for expanding value without raising the price of its packages.
In the 25 years since, as Costco Travel has continued to expand, it has transformed its members’ travel experience by offering carefully chosen travel packages that offer exclusive value and clear, easy-to-understand, bottom-line pricing.
Initially, the new service’s goals were modest, offering short vacation packages to the most popular destinations. “Costco Travel was created simply to give our members another benefit of their membership,” says Kathy Robinson, vice president and general manager of Costco Travel. “We were sort of a ‘beach-destination’ service at first.” As Costco Travel gained traction, cruise lines, hotels and other travel-related entities took note. They recognized that Costco’s substantial and growing membership base could benefit their businesses. The upshot, according to Chris Hendrix, Costco Travel’s assistant vice president, was that in 2008 more travel suppliers began approaching the service, resulting in the introduction of more cruises and vacation packages at high-end hotels and resorts around the world.

Just as Costco limits the number of products it stocks in its warehouses in order to manage costs, value and quality, Costco Travel doesn’t try to be everything to every traveler. “Unlike other travel providers that sell everything under the sun, Costco Travel has a focused selection of offerings,” says Hendrix. “This allows us to create packages that we are able to negotiate more value into—such as an automatic upgrade or a Costco Shop Card.”
Costco members get complete and clear, up-front pricing from agents and from the Costco Travel website, Costcotravel.com, which was launched in 2009. There’s no need to ferret out hidden costs to determine the out-the-door price for a vacation. “Many other travel sites don’t display ‘all-in’ pricing initially but only reveal the total costs once you get further along in their booking path,” says Hendrix. “With Costco Travel, there are no surprises.” Like all areas of Costco, Costco Travel strives to gain its members’ trust by being completely transparent so they can make informed travel purchases.
“I worked for many travel companies in the past where [it was] all about the profit driven from the sales,” says Robinson. “For Costco Travel, it’s about offering fantastic trips at a great savings to our members, so they come back over and over again.”

In 2011, Costco Travel expanded its rental car program. More options followed, including a hotel-only program, Kirkland Signature™ cruises, specialty vacations, travel insurance and more.
Throughout, the focus on quality, value and member service has not wavered, says Hendrix. “Along with best-in-class product and pricing, another thing that really sets us apart is the support and assistance we offer our members during the booking process, whether it’s online or via phone with our dedicated Costco Travel call center agents,” he says. “We have outstanding call center representatives who can discuss options and help members make the best choice based on their needs.”
“Grab a booklet, go online to see all of our products and then start to dream about your next destination,” adds Robinson.
