On this island of tropical palm-fringed beaches there's an ambiance that ranges from sophisticated (in Bridgetown) to slow-paced. Enjoy an exciting tour of Harrison's cave, filled with underground streams, thundering waterfalls, stalactites and stalagmites.
Tobago’s capital is quite lively. The inter-island ferry docks in lower Scarborough, where you’ll also find the bus terminal, food outlets, the main market, the island’s only mall and an occasional speaker’s corner.
Port-of-Spain is still one of the most active commercial cities in the Caribbean. The cultural scene is as vital as ever, especially during the country's riotous Carnival -- a period of festivities, concerts, and shows that begins after Christmas and culminates in a two-day street parade that ends on Ash Wednesday. The capital is home to around 300,000 of Trinidad's 1.3 million residents -- Africans, Indians, Americans, Europeans, and Asians, each culture with its own language and customs. About a quarter of the population is Hindu, which is why there's an abundance of East Indian festivals, religious celebrations, and delicious East Indian food.
Saint George's or Saint George, town (1991 pop. 4,439), capital of Grenada, in the West Indies. A port town on a deep and beautiful harbor, it is the administrative headquarters of the country and a growing tourist center. Chief exports are cacao, nutmeg, and mace. St. George's was the capital of the former British colony of the Windward Islands.
In the mornings, the cobblestone streets of Kingstown are full of uniformed school children, government workers, dollar taxi cab drivers, Rastafarians peddling sandals and old women selling from upside-down cardboard boxes the oddest collection of goods - packs of chewing gum, peanuts wrapped in cellophane and pieces of ginger. Hustlers appear out of alleyways to coax tourists on rides to the volcano or to the Falls of Baleine, or to sell recordings of local calypsonians and bands such as Blaksand and New Direction. As the afternoon heat grips the town, government officers, bankers and lawyers take their lunch at the Bounty, a café on Halifax Street, or perhaps at the more cosmopolitan rooftop restaurant in the Cobblestone Inn, a converted sugar and arrowroot warehouse in Upper Bay Street. In the port, the dockside hubbub reaches a crescendo every Tuesday when the large white Geest Industries freighter arrives to ship the week's crop of bananas to the rest of the world. The banana industry is estimated to account for 40 percent of St Vincent's exports and 30 percent of the island's economy.
Mountainous Martinique, also known as the “Land of Flowers,” is certainly one of the most colorful islands in the Caribbean. Acres of fertile soil account for lush tropical vegetation and an abundance of flowers, vast stretches of banana plantations, pineapple fields, and green seas of sugarcane. The 425-square-mile island is the largest of the Windward Islands. With its great diversity of towering mountains, verdant rain forests, beaches and French-Caribbean ambiance, Martinique appeals to a wide spectrum of visitors.
Castries is the capital and largest city of Saint Lucia, an island country in the Caribbean. The quarter with the same name had a population of 70,000 on 22 May 2013 and stretches over an area of 80 km2 .Castries is in a flood gut and is built on reclaimed land. It houses the seat of government and the head offices of many of foreign and local businesses. The city's design is in a grid pattern. Its sheltered harbour receives cargo vessels, ferry boats, and cruise ships. It houses duty-free shopping facilities such as Point Seraphine and La Place Carenage. Many restaurants offer menus from local to Chinese. Supermarkets and other shopping facilities provide goods. The city is well served by a bus system and taxi service.
