North America: Newfoundland & Gulf of St. Lawrence Reverie Voyage

Seabourn®

The City of Montreal is a striking union of old-world charm and new-world attitude. Its name refers to the triple-peaked hill in the heart of the city, Mount Royal. The majestic Saint Lawrence River drains the entire Great Lakes Basin from its outflow at Lake Ontario, and remains tidal as far inland as Quebec City. Where it narrows, the banks are decorated with charming villages, which from the ship appear reminiscent of towns along the Seine or the Loire in France. Havre-Saint-Pierre (Harbour St. Pierre in English), is a small town of 3,300 inhabitants, situated along Quebec's North Shore. St John's, the capital of Newfoundland, is our last port of call. As the ship squeezes through the 'narrows' and enters into the inner harbor, the cultural and traditional flavor of the city quickly becomes apparent. The city of Saguenay is situated on the beautiful Saguenay River 78 miles (126 km) upriver from its confluence with the mighty St. Lawrence. Quebec and the cradle of French Canadian civilization. With its historic ramparts, churches and Old Town, it is considered one of the most beautiful cities in North America.

Day 1 Port of Call Montreal Departure 5:00pm

Overview

Culture is to Montreal what air is to all living things. Most Montrealers don't distinguish culture from their daily existence. It's just there. As they live and breathe. Perhaps it's the effect of the majestic St. Lawrence River that leads to rich voyages of the imagination. Or maybe it's the French passion that has stimulated artists for centuries. Whatever it is, it has inspired such world-acclaimed artists as l'Orchestre symphonique under the baton of Charles Dutoit, the Grands Ballets Canadiens under the direction of Gradimir Pankov, novelists Michel Tremblay and Mordecai Richler, Céline Dion, and the Cirque du Soleil. Painting and sculpture flourish here, too, in the great halls of Montréal's many prestigious museums, and hundreds of top-notch local galleries. And each year the Opéra de Montréal offers a complete roster of the greatest classics, while various theatre companies stage eclectic productions, from the works of Shakespeare to the latest in fringe. Then there's Ex-Centris, a revolutionary Cinema and New Media Complex where film buffs go to see the best independent films from around the world and the plugged-in get their technological thrills.A veritable hotbed of creativity for all the arts, Montréal has a special soft spot for contemporary dance. Ever since the pioneering Festival International de nouvelle dance was first held here in 1985, it has provided a stage for new aesthetics and has showcased radical experiments by the best and brightest choreographers and dancers in the world.

Day 2 Saint Lawrence River

Overview

The Saint Lawrence River (French fleuve Saint-Laurent), originally Kaniatarowanenneh ("big waterway") in Mohawk, is a large west-to-east flowing river in the middle latitudes of North America, connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. It bisects the Canadian province of Quebec and forms part of the border between New York State in the United States and the province of Ontario in Canada. The Saint Lawrence River is born at the outflow of Lake Ontario at Kingston, Ontario. From there, it passes Brockville, Cornwall, Montreal, Trois-Rivières, and Quebec City before draining into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, the largest estuary in the world. It runs 1900 miles (3058 kilometers), and together with the Great Lakes, which it drains, and their tributaries, forms the world's largest fresh-water system. The river includes Lac Saint-Louis south of Montreal and Lac Saint-François at Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec. It surrounds such islands as the Thousand Islands near Kingston, the Island of Montreal, Île Jésus (Laval), Île d'Orléans near Quebec City, and Anticosti Island north of the Gaspé. Lake Champlain and the Ottawa, Richelieu, and Saguenay rivers drain into the St. Lawrence. The first European to navigate the St. Lawrence was Jacques Cartier, who also claimed New France for Francis I. The French called the river Rivière du Canada until the early 1600s. The St. Lawrence was formerly continuously navigable only as far as Montreal due to the Lachine Rapids. The Lachine Canal was the first to allow ships to pass the rapids; the Saint Lawrence Seaway, an extensive system of canals and locks, now permits ocean-going vessels to pass to Lake Superior.

Day 3 Port of Call Havre Saint Pierre Arrival 8:00am Departure 6:00pm

Overview

Havre Saint-Pierre was founded in 1857 by fishermen who came from the Madeleine Islands. In 1948, Havre-Saint-Pierre became industrialized when the mining of ilmenite (iron titanate) located 43 kilometres north of the village was begun. At the Havre Saint-Pierre Cultural and Interpretation Centre you will find a permanent exhibition about the ethno-history of the region and at the Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve Interpretation Centre, photographs, talks and films about this remarkable archipelago. Take the time to talk to the people you meet about town or down at the wharf as the fishermen unload. You may even meet M. Roland Jomphe, a colourful and renowned poet whose writing has so romantically expressed the intrinsic beauty of the Mingan Islands and life in the region.

Day 4 Cruising
Day 5 Port of Call L'Anse aux Meadows Arrival 7:00am Departure 5:00pm

Overview

L'Anse aux Meadows is located at the furthest end of the Northern Peninsula in Newfoundland, Canada. In the year 1000, it was the site of a Viking encampment, the only documented Viking site in North America. This is where Europeans first came to this continent. Leif Eriksson might have slept here, along with 80 or so other Viking men and women. Now a Canada National Historic Site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, L'Anse aux Meadows was first excavated in 1960 by Helge Ingstad. Today there is a small museum to house the artifacts uncovered by the dig and recreations of three Viking sod houses. Near the beach and surrounded by a rude woven fence, the huts present a realistic setting. An overturned longboat is ready to slide into the water, a fish flake, for drying cod and capelin, stands empty, waiting for the day's catch to be cleaned and hung, while pine smoke pours from the opening in the roof of the longest house. Maybe it will be warm inside, not just in my hopeful imagination!

Day 6 Port of Call St. John's/Newfoundland Arrival 2:00pm

Overview

St. John's, a city on Newfoundland island off Canada's Atlantic coast, is the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador province. Its harbor was settled by the British in the 1600s. Downtown is known for its colorful row houses. Above the city is Signal Hill with walking trails and the site of the first transatlantic wireless communication, Cabot Tower, which commemorates John Cabot's discovery of Newfoundland.

Day 7 Port of Call St. John's/Newfoundland Departure 5:00pm

Day 8 Port of Call St. Pierre Arrival 9:00am Departure 4:00pm

Overview

Located off the western end of Newfoundland's Burin Peninsula, the archipelago of Saint Pierre and Miquelon is composed of eight islands, totalling 242 square kilometres, of which only two are inhabited. The islands are bare and rocky, with steep coasts, and only a thin layer of peat to soften the hard landscape.Saint Pierre and Miquelon, officially the Overseas Collectivity of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, is a self-governing territorial overseas collectivity of France, situated in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean near the Newfoundland and Labrador province of Canada. The islands are situated at the entrance of Fortune Bay, which extends into the southwestern coast of Newfoundland, near the Grand Banks. They are 3,819 kilometres from Brest, the nearest point in Metropolitan France, and 25 kilometres from the Burin Peninsula of Newfoundland.

Day 9 Port of Call Cap-aux-Meules Arrival 10:00am Departure 6:00pm

Overview

Cap-aux-Meules is the ferry's point of arrival where the visitor first makes acquaintance with Îles-de-la-Madeleine's countryside. For the last forty years, the concentration of businesses and services has made Cap-aux-Meules, with its Main Street and village-like appearance, the centre of the Islands. The name, Cap-aux-Meules (Grindstone), comes from the presence of grindstone in the hill overlooking the port. The harbour of Cap-aux-Meules is a port bustling with activity: offshore and coastal fishing, the Madelipêche fish processing plant, the arrival and departure site of maritime crossings with the mainland (Souris, Montreal) and ferry boat to Entry Island. It is also the departure point for guided boat trips for fishing, observation cliffs and visits to Entry Island. Sailing enthusiasts visiting the archipelago will find a well-equipped marina, La Marina and the Club Nautique. The C.T.M.A (maritime carrier) and the Canadian Coastguard are nearby. From Chemin du Quai road you can gain access to the stairs leading to a belvedere with a panoramic view from the summit of the hill. These stairs also lead to the Littoral walking path, which follows the cliff to a small beach 2 km away. Not far from the harbour, boats in dry-dock wait for the next fishing season or remain under repair. An enormous crane safely transfers boats on long straps. The tourist information office welcomes visitors on arrival here. It is located in Cap-aux-Meules at the intersection of Chemin du Débarcadère road and route199. Here you may pick up tourist information on various services, weather, tide times, accommodations, restaurant menus and events, etc. Despite the ''urban'' look of Cap-aux-Meules, nature is never very far away. A walk in Parc des Buck Park around Quinn Lake, at the end of the Chemin De la Mine road, or a little further into the hills, will reveal spectacular views of the island and its neighbours.

Day 10 Cruising
Day 11 Port of Call Saguenay Arrival 8:00am Departure 6:00pm

Overview

Saguenay is a city in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec, Canada, on the Saguenay River, about 200 kilometers north of Quebec City by overland route.

Day 12 Port of Call Quebec City Arrival 8:00am Departure 7:00pm

Overview

Quebec City sits on the Saint Lawrence River in Canada's mostly French-speaking Québec province. Dating to 1608, it has a fortified colonial core, Vieux-Québec and Place Royale, with stone buildings and narrow streets. This area is the site of the towering Château Frontenac Hotel and the imposing Citadelle of Québec. The Petit Champlain district’s cobblestone streets are lined with bistros and boutiques.
