More About Orlando

Overview

Straddling north and south Florida, Orlando is the gateway for many visitors, primarily because it's close to all things Disney. It's also about two hours east of Tampa (home to yet another theme park, Busch Gardens) and an hour southwest of Kennedy Space Center. Edging Orlando to the south is Kissimmee, with home-grown attractions like Gatorland. The pace slows considerably 20 miles northeast of Orlando in the charming Winter Park suburb.

General Safety Tips: By taking a few simple security precautions before and during your vacation, you can help ensure that you, your traveling companions, and your valuables are as safe and secure as possible.
  • To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
  • Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
  • Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
  • Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
  • If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.

Planner

In seven days you can visit some or all of Disney as well as Universal and a water park. Add an extra day each for SeaWorld, another water park or area sightseeing.

Spring is sunny and temperate. April and May can be nippy, but warm enough for the water parks. Avoid the weeks before and after Easter (spring break times). May, excluding Memorial Day, and early June are excellent bets. In summer, crowds are thick and lines are long, but theme-park hours are extended and often filled with bonus entertainment. There are slightly fewer people in late August.

Late summer and fall comprise hurricane season, but from late September through November, days are bright, temperatures are cooler and crowds are lighter. It’s too chilly for swimming in winter, and at least one water park is closed.

Top Experiences

  • Magic Kingdom : Disney’s small but emblematic park has the iconic Space Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean rides, as well as newer thrills like Stitch’s Great Escape.

  • Epcot : Future World focuses on discoveries of science and technology; World Showcase lets you tour 11 countries without jet lag.

  • Hollywood Studios : Amazing attractions such as Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, and the Great Movie Ride are key at Disney’s recreation of old-time Hollywood.

  • Animal Kingdom : Around and amid a 100-acre savanna and wildlife preserve are a water ride; a safari ride; and shows in Asia, Africa, and Dinoland areas.

  • Disney’s Water Parks : At Blizzard Beach, the best ride is the 55-mph dead-drop to a splashy landing from Summit Plummet. Water babies love Typhoon Lagoon's Ketchakiddie Creek.

  • Universal Orlando : Movie and TV fans love this place, which is geared to older kids and adults. Two other parks—Islands of Adventure and Universal's Volcano Bay Water Theme Park—add to the fun.

  • Getting Away from the Parks : Once you’ve exhausted (or been exhausted by) the parks, try the shops, museums, golf courses, and gardens of Winter Park, Kissimmee, and elsewhere. Don’t rule out a day trip to the Kennedy Space Center.
