Firsthand: Universal Epic Universe

In addition to being a lover of travel and the global destination experiences that it affords, I am also a theme park enthusiast. For several years, I patiently awaited the opportunity to visit Universal Epic Universe at Universal Orlando Resort once it opened – and that visit occurred recently.

Spanning 750 acres, Universal Epic Universe is the fourth theme park in Universal Orlando Resort’s portfolio. Upon crossing its threshold, I was immediately transported to its imaginative Celestial Park, which is the hub of Universal Epic Universe.  One thing that immediately caught my attention is that Celestial Park is very kinetic – and it sets the tone of what’s to come throughout your visits. Everywhere you look, there’s motion – from the Chronos portal (at the main entry) to the water showcases and even the constant cycling of the park’s monumental dueling rollercoaster, Stardust Racers, the stage is set for what is certain to be a fulfilling and fun day in the park. You should also take advantage of some of the delicious dining offerings in Celestial Park, as I did with a fantastic meal at The Blue Dragon Pan-Asian Restaurant, as well as The Oak & Star Tavern, which serves up some delicious BBQ dishes. And the shopping offerings throughout Celestial Park are an experience! But be warned: The wide variety and impressive quality of all of the merchandise offerings are certain to break your budget!

Celestial Park is not only the hub of Universal Epic Universe, it is also the gateway to its four additional worlds which are very immersive. Reaching each world requires a brief jaunt through well-themed and illuminated portals. Leaning into the overall kinetic vibe of Universal Epic Universe, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD™ is also very visual and very interactive – with a Power-Up-Band™ your family can participate in various fun interactive games and Key Challenges throughout Super Mario Land™ and Donkey Kong Country™. SUPER NINTENDO WORLD™ also features exciting attractions from Mario Kart™: Bowser's Challenge in Super Mario Land™ to Mine-Cart Madness™ in Donkey Kong Country™. There is so much to do for the whole family in SUPER NINTENDO WORLD™.

I made my way back to Celestial Park and quickly found myself crossing into the portal of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ - Ministry of Magic™. From 1920s Paris to the 1990s British Ministry, this world is incredibly authentic to both the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films. On the new Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry™ attraction, you will be transported from wizarding Paris to the British Ministry of Magic™ via the Métro-Floo for the trial of the infamous Dolores Umbridge™ – which is a larger-than-life, entertaining, and thrilling experience. After exploring the British Ministry of Magic™, I went back to Place Cachée to visit Le Cirque Arcanus™, which is a live stage circus performance of surprising wonders and fantastic beasts. Beyond Le Cirque Arcanus™ and Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry™ there's a lot to do here: from amazing interactive wand magic, to interacting with fantastic beasts on the streets of wizarding Paris, to a myriad of food and beverage options, it is rather easy to spend most of your day in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ - Ministry of Magic™.

Image inside Dark Universe

Continuing my journey throughout Universal Epic Universe, I decided to experience Dark Universe, which is dedicated to the Universal Monsters. Suffice it to say, everything here feels very dark and moody. Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment is an impressively themed attraction that introduces riders to Dr. Victoria Frankenstein (the great-great-granddaughter of Henry Frankenstein), who is determined to rein in Count Dracula with the help of her own monster creation to finally bring prestige and respect to the Frankenstein name. I was very impressed with the pacing and all the surprise moments this attraction provided! After enjoying this immersive attraction, I recommend that you head over to the Curse of the Werewolf for a unique spinning rollercoaster experience that doesn’t disappoint.

To round out my day, I entered How to Train Your Dragon - Isle of Berk from its Celestial Park portal. Of course, this entire world is based on the beloved franchise, How to Train Your Dragon. I should mention that during my visit, the temperatures were bouncing within 90 degrees, so enjoying a ride on Fyre Drill within this world was MOST welcome – because it’s a water ride that has all sorts of water features (including onboard water cannons) which will help to cool you down. Also, I really enjoyed riding Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, which is a roller coaster that practically anyone should be able to ride. It has just the right amount of speed, curves, and more – making this attraction a fave with families.

Stay at the Universal Helios Grand Hotel

When it comes to Universal accommodations: Universal Helios Grand Hotel, a Loews Hotel, at Universal Epic Universe is the most accessible property to the park (resort guests can enter and exit Universal Epic Universe directly from its exclusive entryway) and it is a bold edifice of refinement and high-end amenities. And dining at this resort is an elevated experience – especially at Flora Taverna with its chef-curated menu, which drips with Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Other resorts adjacent to Universal Epic Universe (accessible via complimentary regularly scheduled resort transportation) include: Universal Terra Luna Resort and Universal Stella Nova Resort – both of which share similar property footprints, amenities, and celestial theming.

The order of which worlds you choose at Universal Epic Universe is entirely up to you. The main thing is that you experience each one of them. While I was able to experience quite a bit during my 1-day visit to Universal Epic Universe, I know that a couple of additional days to enjoy this park would’ve fully satiated my appetite. That said, I recommend that you and your family plan for 2-3 days at Universal Epic Universe, and 3-4 days at Universal Studios Florida, Universal Islands of Adventure, and Universal Volcano Bay. It will be well worth the visit!
