Road Trip: Fabulous Places to Drive in the USA

Taking a road trip throughout the US is an experience unto itself. While jet travel whisks you to your destination, it certainly offers expansive panoramic views of the lower stratosphere and the Earth below. However, road trips are a more measured way of travel so you and those traveling with you can experience all the intricate details of the regions you’re driving through. And you can take time to experience the local culture and flavors at your own pace. Here are a few ideas to help you plan your Road Trip vacation.

Tulsa, Oklahoma is just one of the cities you can see driving from Chicago to L.A. on Route 66.

    Route 66

So iconic, Route 66 had a popular song written about it in 1946. As the lyrics state: “It winds from Chicago - Opens a dialog to LA; More than two thousand miles all the way.” Throughout your journey, you’ll experience America in a way that is rare, particularly for those who live within America’s sprawling metropolises. Along your drive, you’ll visit smaller cities such as Springfield, Missouri (which is has the distinction of being the Queen City of the Ozarks), Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (home to a popular annual International Balloon Festival), and Flagstaff, Arizona (where you can visit the Lava Tube Cave which is a geologic point of interest – also, the views of the Grand Canyon from this area are stunning). Throughout your entire journey, you’ll be able to experience regional culinary favorites such as BBQ, Tex-Mex, and California cuisine.

Beautiful beaches await on a Pacific Coast Highway road trip through California.

      Pacific Coast Highway

State Route 1 is considered one of the most scenic drives in the US. Originating in San Diego - Opens a dialog , your journey north will take you through affluent neighborhoods of Orange County’s Newport Coast as you continue onwards to Huntington Beach (better known as Surf City, USA), the coastal wetlands of Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, and Seal Beach. Eventually, your journey will take you through Los Angeles County’s South Bay beachside communities of Redondo Beach and Hermosa Beach and then onwards to its coastal cities of Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, and Malibu. Once you arrive along the Central Coast you’ll certainly want to stop in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and San Simeon (be sure to visit Hearst Castle while here) before heading onwards towards very scenic Big Sur. From there, your journey continues towards Monterey Bay and San Francisco Bay before ending the journey in northern Mendocino County. All along you’ll be able to experience some of the region’s best cuisine, including traditional Mexican, Cal-Mex, all types of Asian cuisines (especially Thai in Los Angeles), and simple and imaginative burgers, your culinary experiences along PCH won’t leave you dissatisfied.

The scenic Road to Maui passes over 59 bridges around a natural rainforest.

          Road to Hana

Vacationing in Maui - Opens a dialog is always a delight! But there’s one experience that road warriors will appreciate: A drive on the Road to Hana. Think of this as being an adventure within an adventure. Fifty-two miles from Kahului, this uninterrupted journey can be completed within 2-1/2 hours. The terrain along Route 360 is sinuous with nearly 620 curves, and in some areas, there’s only one lane. While the drive is scenic and passes over 59 bridges, much of the drive takes place around a natural rainforest. While driving, you’ll even find natural waterfalls, jungles, and a black sand beach. Once you arrive in Hana, you’ll immediately agree that the journey was worth the effort as some of the most picturesque beaches are in Hana, and its art and culture scene is vibrant.
