Klawock is a city in Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area, in the U.S. state of Alaska, on the west coast of Prince of Wales Island, on Klawock Inlet, across from Klawock Island. The population was 854 at the 2000 census.It is 90 km (56 mi) from Ketchikan, 11 km (seven mi) from Craig, and 39 km (24 mi) from Hollis.Klawock's first settlers were Tlingit who came from the northern winter village of Tuxekan. They used it as a fishing camp for the summer period and called it by several different names: Klawerak, Tlevak, Clevak, and Klawak.In 1868, European Americans opened a trading post and a salmon saltery; some years later, in 1878, a San Francisco firm opened the first cannery in Alaska. In the following decades, several others were established. A United States post office was established in 1882. The 1890 census recorded the town's population as 260.The Alaska Native Brotherhood (ANB) and Alaska Native Sisterhood (ANS), nonprofit organizations working for the civil rights of Alaska Natives, were established by residents in 1912. Its founders and many volunteers built the Town Hall and a community center in 1939, during the Great Depression.In 1929 the town incorporated as a city, and in 1934 Congress awarded federal funding for the expansion of the cannery, on the condition that the community remain liquor-free. At the same time, the Klawock Cooperative Association (a nonprofit organization) was formed to manage the cannery.

Humpback whales feed in Icy Strait above North Chichagof Island, an important travel corridor for many marine mammals, including federally threatened Steller's sea lions. Marbled murrelets feed in large numbers within the waters of Icy Strait and nest in the island's coastal old-growth forest.

Stretching over 90 miles long and covering over 1,350 square miles in area, Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America. It is also one of the most impressive, a 300-foot wall of ice rising sheer and jagged from the ocean. You may hear the rumble and see the monumental splash as the glacier severs into great ice chunks, known as "calves."

Overview
Valdez is nestled at the foot of the Chugach Mountains on the shores of Prince William Sound. It has been called the Switzerland of Alaska and boasts harsh mountain peaks and glaciers. Valdez averages 300 inches of snow a year and is home to the World Extreme Skiing Championships. Valdez is a diligent seaport, shipping oil from the Trans-Alaska Pipeline to the west coast of the United States, and now to the Orient. The Port of Valdez was named in 1790 by Senor Fidalgo for the celebrated Spanish naval officer Antonio Valdez y Basan. Due to its exceptional ice-free port, a town developed in 1898 as a debarkation point for men seeking a route to the Klondike gold fields. Valdez soon became the supply center of its gold mining region and was incorporated as a City in 1901. Tsunamis generated by the 1964 earthquake destroyed the original City, killing several residents. The society was rebuilt in a more sheltered location nearby. During the 11970s construction of the Trans-Alaska oil pipeline terminal and other cargo transportation facilities brought rapid development to Valdez.Seeing the famous TransAlaska Pipeline Terminal is high on many visitors' lists of things to do in Valdez. Guided tours of this facility are conducted daily through the summer. Day-long or extended tours of Prince William Sound will take you to be best vantage points of glaciers, sea life, and shorebirds. Excursion vessels, rental boats, charters, and sailboats depart from the Small Boat Harbor. FFlightseeingtrips over some of the most impressive mountains anywhere are regularly made throughout the summer in helicopters and fixed-wing craft. Outdoor enthusiasts can get pleasure from both inland and ocean options in Valdez. Guided raft trips will take you through Keystone Canyon and past towering waterfalls.Wilderness river journeys will bring you camping or to remote lodges in the Copper Basin. Kayak rentals for thrilledpaddlersr are available along with guided nature tours in Port Valdez and Robe Lake. Ground sightseeing tours will take you up close for photo stops in Keystone Canyon and Thompson Pass. One can take a walking trail right to the edge of Worthington Glacier.

The city of Kodiak on the eastern coast of Kodiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska is only a 60-minute jet flight from Anchorage. This community is Alaska's sixth largest and is situated on the ssecond-largestisland under the American flag. Over 15,575 residents live on the island of Kodiak, including the outer villages and the U.S. Coast Guard Base. Kodiak Island is perhaps best known for its giant brown bears, the largest land carnivores on earth. They can weigh over 1200 pounds and, when standing erect, can measure over 11 feet tall. It is estimated that nearly 3,000 of these magnificent animals live on the remote reaches of the island. Cool summer ocean breezes and mild winter winds give Kodiak a moderate climate. However, because of its proximity to the ever-changing fluence of the cold Arctic waters and the effects of the warm Japanese current, the weather is often rainy, foggy, and certainly never-changing When the sun shines on Kodiak, and it does quite often, you'll be treated to some of the most spectacular coastal and mountain scenery you'll find anywhere. Summer temperatures range between 40 and 70 degrees. In winter, the temperatures re a bearable 30 degrees avon rage. Most of Kodiak's precipitation is in the form of rain, about 60 inches annually. It's this moist, yet sunny environment which gives Kodiak its lushness of grasses and brilliant varieties of wildflowers. It also provides Kodiak with clear-running streams that attract the multitudes of spawning salmon each season. The Kodiak Island archipelago comprises some 200 islands. The largest island in the chain is Kodiak which is followed by Afognak, Sitkalidak, Raspberry, and Shuyak Islands. A wilderness state park offering cabins and kayaking opportunities has been established on Afognak Island.

Port of Call Dutch Harbor

Overview
Dutch Harbor is located in the Aleutian Islands on Unalaska Island. The commercial fishing fleet berthed here is responsible for the pre-eminent catch, in terms of quantity and quality, of the nation's ports. The area's 18th-century Russian past is reflected by two stately Russian Orthodox churches. Dutch Harbor's participation in World War II, beginning with a Japanese air attack on June 2, 1942, is reminiscent of an impressive array of weathered military sites, concrete pillboxes, and bunkers. Eleven military installations consisted of the Dutch Harbor Naval Base and other facilities required for harbor protection and support.

Overview
Describing Tokyo to someone who has never been here is a formidable task. After all, how do you describe a city that--as one of my friends visiting Tokyo for the first time put it--seems like it's part of another planet? To be sure, Tokyo is very different from Western capitals, but what sets it apart is its people. Approximately 12 million people reside within Tokyo's 1,200,000,000 sq. km (800 sq. miles), and almost one-fourth of Japan's total population lives within commuting distance of the city. This translates into a crush of humanity that packs the subways, crowds the sidewalks, and fills the department stores beyond belief. In some parts of the city, the streets are as crowded at 3 am as they are at 3 pm. With its high-energy, visual overload, Tokyo makes even New York seem like a sleepy, laid-back town. And yet, despite its limited space for harmonious living, Tokyo remains one of the safest cities in the world, with remarkably little crime or violence. No matter how lost I may become, I know that people will go out of their way to help me. Hardworking, honest, and helpful to strangers, the Japanese are their country's greatest asset. With Tokyo so densely packed, it comes as no shock to learn that land here is more valuable than gold and that buildings are built practically on top of each other, shaped like pieces in a jigsaw puzzle to fit the existing plots of real estate. More than perhaps any other city in the world, Japan's capital is a concrete jungle, with a few parks but not many trees to break the monotony, and it stretches on and on as far as the eye can see. Fires, earthquakes, wars, the zeal for modernization, and the price of land have taken their toll on the city, eradicating almost all evidence of previous centuries. It's as though Tokyo was born only this morning, with all the messy aftermath of a city conceived without t plan and interested only in the future. Thus, first-time visitors to Tokyo are almost invariably disappointed. They come expecting an exotic Asian city, but instead find a megalopolis Westernized to the point of drabness. Used to the grand edifices and monuments of Western cities, they look in vain for Tokyo's monuments to its past--ancient temples, exquisite gardens, imperial palaces, or whatever else they've imagined. Instead, they find what may be, quite arguably, one of the ugliest cities in the world. So, while Tokyo is one of my favorite cities, it's an appreciation that came only with time. When I first moved here, I was tormented by the unsettling feeling that I was somehow missing out on the "real" Tokyo. Even though I was living and working here, Tokyo seemed beyond my grasp, elusive, vague, and undefined. I felt that the meaning of the city was out there somewhere if only I knew where to look. With time, I finally learned that I needn't look farther than my front window. Tokyo has no center but rather is made up of a series of small towns and neighborhoods clustered together, each with its history, flavor, and atmosphere. There are narrow residential streets, ma-and-pa shops, fruit stands, and stores. There's the neighborhood tofu factory, the lunch-box stand, the grocery shop, and the tiny police station, where the cops know the residents by name and patrol the area by bicycle. There are carefully pruned bonsai trees gracing sidewalks, women in kimonos bowing and shuffling down streets, and wooden homes on impossibly narrow streets. Walk in the old downtown neighborhoods of Asakusa or Yanaka and you're worlds apart from the trendy quarters of Harajuku or the high-rises of Shinjuku. Neighborhoods like these make Tokyo lovable and livable. What's more, once visitors get to know Tokyo better, they learn that you can't judge Tokyo by what it looks like on the outside, for this is a city of interiors. Even those concrete monsters may house interiors that are fascinating in design and innovation. In the basement of that drab building could well be a restaurant with wooden beams, mud walls, and thatched ceiling, imported intact from a farmhouse in the Japan Alps; on its roof could be a small Shinto shrine, while the top floor could house a high-tech bar or a sophisticated French restaurant. And beneath Tokyo's concrete shell is a thriving cultural life left very much intact. If,f you're interested in Japan's performing arts as well as such diverse activities as the tea ceremony or sumo, Tokyo is your best bet for offering the most at any one time. Tokyo is also rich in museums and claims the largest repository of Japanese art in the world. It also gets my vote as the pop-art capital of the world; if you're into kitsch, you'll be in high heaven. I can't imagine being bored here, even for just a minute.
