More About Barcelona

Overview

Barcelona has long been called "the Great Enchantress" and it's easy to see why. From the twisting streets of the Gothic quarter to the broad avenues of L'Eixample, it's a city of almost endless variation. What other city would have both the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família, Antoni Gaudí's extravagant (and still unfinished) cathedral, and the Museu d´Art Contemporani, the massive concrete-and-glass box by American architect Richard Meir? This is a city of art, with dozens of worthwhile museums. It's also a city of food, where sharing half a dozen plates of tapas is what friends do when they get together. But mostly it's a city of incredible beauty, and there's nothing better than strolling around to get a better look.

Planner

There's not really a bad time to visit Barcelona. Summers, though very hot on occasion, are usually not too steamy for comfort. Temperatures rarely surpass 100°F, and air-conditioning is becoming more widespread. In any case, wearing light clothing and dining alfresco on warm summer nights are among northern Spain's most pleasant experiences. The city is relaxed and somewhat empty in August; small shops and some restaurants shut down for the entire month, but museums remain open.

All in all, spring and fall offer the best weather. Winter in Barcelona is chilly enough to warrant bringing an overcoat, but it's almost never freezing. Nippy weather makes long hikes through the city much easier and creates a cozy niche for fireside dining and hearty winter cuisine de cuyera (requiring the use of a spoon).

Top Experiences

  • Glorious Food : Where not so long ago the best policy was to look for Italian or French food, Barcelona is now filled with exciting restaurants celebrating local produce from the sea as well as land.

  • Markets : If you want to dive into Barcelona head first, there's no better way to start than with a visit to its Boqueria market on the Rambla—the oldest market of its kind in Europe.

  • Modernisme : Barcelona is filled with buildings and other works of the late-19th-century artistic movement known as art nouveau. With the masterworks by Antoni Gaudí, the full flowering of the Catalan imagination is on display here as it is nowhere else in the world.

  • Museums : Barcelona has some of the world's greatest museums, including the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, which includes outstanding Romanesque murals, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection of old masters.
