More About Kaanapali

Overview

A master-planned community, the first of its kind, transformed Kaanapali into a vacation paradise. Resorts and condominiums built into little villages hug the shores of Kaanapali beach creating unique communities with individual personalities. Every master resort needs a championship golf course and the Royal Kaanapali and Kaanapali Kai anchor the golf experience in Kaanapali.

Whalers Village, a famous open-air shopping center, offers a blend of well-known stores with one-of-a-kind hidden treasures. A variety of restaurants and entertainment options make this an excellent stop for families and couples to explore.

One of the most iconic experiences of this area is the nightly lele kawa (cliff dive) ceremony off of Puu Kekaa, or Black Rock. At sunset, a cliff diver runs along the lava rocks, lighting torches along the way. With all the torches lit, the diver blows from a conch shell and leaps from the cliff into the surrounding waters, reenacting the events of King Kahekili.

To the south of Kaanapali is the historic town of Lahaina. Formerly the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, Lahaina was transformed into a whaling village during the 1800s. Stroll historic Front Street filled with art galleries, unique shops, and restaurants. For a more in-depth tour of Lahaina's history, take the self-guided tour along the Lahaina Historic Trail. This comprehensive tour is comprised of 62 sites of historical significance, highlighting Hawaiian History including the whaling industry, missionaries, and immigrant life that transformed the landscape of modern Maui.
